Forklift certification and diplomas: everything about exams, checks, and validity

Dutch law does not explicitly require a forklift driver to hold a forklift certificate or diploma.
However, anyone operating a forklift must have demonstrable competence to do so safely.
The best way to prove this competence is by obtaining an official forklift certificate.
If a forklift accident occurs, the Labour Inspectorate and/or the insurance company will always ask for proof of qualification. A forklift certificate is the quickest and most reliable way to provide this proof.
So, is a forklift driver’s license mandatory? No, it’s not legally required — but it is highly recommended, especially during inspections or audits.

Forklift Exam – Theory and Practice

What does a forklift course look like? The training lasts one day and consists of both a theoretical and practical part.
The course includes a theory exam and a practical exam. After completing both parts successfully, participants receive their official certificate.

Minimum Age for Forklift Certification

To obtain a forklift certificate, you must be at least 16 years old. However, to operate a forklift independently, you must be 18 years or older. Just like with a driver’s license, participants aged 16 or 17 may complete the course and earn their certificate, but they are only allowed to operate a forklift under supervision. From the age of 18, the operator may drive a forklift without supervision.

How Long Is a Forklift Certificate Valid?

A forklift certificate is valid for five years. If you hold a Hollcert certificate, you can renew it at a reduced rate through a follow-up course. Even if your certificate has expired but you still have experience, you can easily renew it by taking a refresher training day. Renewing every five years helps prevent unsafe habits from forming and ensures you remain fully up to date with the latest safety regulations.

Is a Polish or Other Foreign Forklift Certificate Valid in the Netherlands?

Because every country has different rules and laws, a foreign forklift certificate is not valid in the Netherlands.
Since many migrant workers are active in Dutch logistics, it’s important to know that, for example, a Polish forklift certificate does not meet Dutch legal safety standards. For safety and compliance reasons, these employees should obtain a Dutch forklift certificate. At Hollcert, training is available in Dutch, Polish, and English — our standard languages. Other languages are available upon request.
