Safety and forklift operation: what are the rules and risks?
Operating a forklift always requires alertness — both from the driver and everyone in the surrounding area. Safety comes first.
That’s why it’s highly recommended for every forklift operator to obtain a valid forklift certificate.
Prevention is always better than cure: knowing how to handle a forklift safely is the best way to avoid
With a certificate, the operator demonstrates competence, awareness of safety risks, and the ability to work responsibly with a forklift.
Forklift Hazards
To minimize the risks associated with forklift operation, both knowledge and skill are essential.
At Hollcert, you learn — in both theory and practice — what the main hazards of forklift operation are, and more importantly, how to assess, reduce, and prevent them.
Forklift Safety Rules
In addition to understanding the surroundings, Hollcert’s forklift training also covers all relevant safety rules and regulations. These rules determine how to use and operate a forklift safely and form the foundation for a safe working environment.
Lifting with a Forklift — Is It Allowed?
No, lifting with a forklift is not permitted. This type of work requires specific training and equipment designed for hoisting. Hollcert’s “Safe Lifting” course teaches participants how to lift safely, which cranes and hoists may be used, and how to handle them correctly. Using the right equipment and knowing how to use it safely is an essential part of this training.
Is Driving a Forklift Without a Certificate Allowed?
In the Netherlands, having a forklift certificate is not legally mandatory, but under the Arbo Law (Dutch health and safety regulations), employers must be able to prove that their employees are properly trained and competent to operate a forklift. A valid certificate provides this proof. By renewing your forklift certificate every five years, you stay up to date with the latest safety standards. It’s also a great opportunity to correct bad habits and refresh all essential safety practices.
Is a Reach Truck Certificate Also Valid for Forklift Operation?
Although forklifts and reach trucks may look similar, they are very different machines. A reach truck is designed for working at height in narrow aisles, while a forklift requires more space and operates at lower heights. Because of these differences in design and handling, a separate certificate is required for each type of vehicle.
